The profession of actuaries

Why do we need actuaries?

Insurance and financial risks are the core business of actuaries. Both the financial and insurance business are essentially random and uncertain in nature (claims frequencies, claims expenses, interest rates, equity and bond returns, etc.). Actuaries make the associated risks calculable.

This requires in-depth knowledge of stochastics (probability theory, mathematical statistics, mathematical financial theory, data science, etc.). The main tasks are pricing, reserving, reporting, asset liability management (ALM) and enterprise risk management (ERM).
