SAV INTERNATIONAL

HISTORY

International from the beginning

The Swiss Actuarial Association (SAV) has played an important role at international level since its foundation in 1905. As early as 1895, Swiss actuaries were involved in the founding of the International Actuarial Association (IAA) in Brussels. Originally a professional association of individual members, the IAA has developed into an active global umbrella organization. The SAV is represented there with delegates in several commissions and regularly takes part in international congresses. In addition, many SAV members are involved in the scientific IAA sections ASTIN (non-life insurance) and AFIR (financial mathematics).

EUROPE

Integration into the European actuarial landscape

The Groupe Consultatif Actuariel Européen, now known as the Actuarial Association of Europe (AAE), was founded in 1978. The aim was to advise the EU institutions on actuarial issues. Switzerland, although not an EU member, is now a full member of the AAE. The SAV has delegates on all five AAE committees. Membership also entails obligations, such as the introduction of the title "Actuary:in SAV" (international "Fully Qualified Actuary"), new rules of professional conduct and a disciplinary procedure - all adopted between 1995 and 1997 in the General Assemblies of the SAV.

RECOGNIZED THROUGHOUT EUROPE

Mutual recognition as a milestone

In 1991, the AAE member associations signed an agreement on the mutual recognition of actuarial qualifications, which was revised in 1998. Although Switzerland, as a non-EEA member, was not able to join directly, it was granted equivalent rights via a special agreement. For the members of the "Actuary: in SAV" section, this means a significant relief: their qualifications are recognized throughout the European Economic Area - a significant step forward for mobility and career prospects at European level.
