Summary: The new international accounting standard for insurance contracts is now in force for a while and many corresponding statements have been published in the meantime. Reports reveal a variety of significant differences between the choices companies have made in their implementation of the standard. Many countries around the world have abolished their local standards and use IFRS 17 for statutory purposes, which creates another type of challenges. Some companies have faced unexpected impacts of their implementation choices; analyzing them can provide important learnings. Finally we can explore whether IFRS 17 has actually delivered on its promise of more transparency, consistency and comparability.
